According to the National Water Services Commission's website, the rate of rainfall in the Klang Valley in February 2014 was just 2mm ... In February 2013, the rate was 149mm ... In February 2012, the rate was 217mm ... In 2011 and 2010, February's rainfall rate in the Klang Valley was 50mm and 82mm respectively ... The NWSC website does not provide the stats for the last 10 years or the last 20 years ... The last time we had a serious water crisis, as far as I could recall, was the last time when I was not in the country, which was circa 2003-2005 ....
What these numbers show is basically what most of us have already figured out, by way of gathering information from authorities, the media or surfing on the Internet while we were supposed to be doing work .... Climate change is inevitable ... People have talked about melting polar caps as far as I could recall, which is about 30 years, although of course 30 years ago my mind was elsewhere ... What I think we should realize and really, really burn it in our brains is that, like I've said, climate change is here for good and we cannot expect things to go back to what they use to be, let's say, 100 years ago ...
We can opt to change our lifestyles to help a sustaining Earth remain that way - sustaining for the next aeon, if possible ... But, and let's be honest here, how many of us are willing to change? ... You can shout into someone's ears until the cows come home, but if that person does not want to change, is there a point in wasting energy on them? ...
For me, I'm like most people, a creature of habit, and as you know, habits die hard ... It is difficult for me actually to adjust the amount of water I use to take a shower, for example ... But, to be positive, I am one of those ungodly creatures who are open to the idea of change ...
I look at it this way ... We only have ONE EARTH ... One earth to sustain seven billion people and growing ... Although I very much like the idea of space exploration, by the time we find another sustainable planet to colonize and ultimately ruin, I wonder what this Earth will be like if and when that time comes? The charred remains of a dystopian future, perhaps? ... Why do we bother planning and wasting money for something that may possibly work out when we can pour all that money into making this Earth livable, at least for a few more, say hundreds of thousands of years ... I don't know, this is just me blowing hot air out of my ass, as usual ...
